Kips Bay Decorator Show House 2012

A Tribute to Albert Hadely – Designed by: Brian J. McCarthy Inc., Bunny Williams Inc., & David Kleinberg Design Associates

Thursday evening a few friends and I visited the Kips Bay Decorator Show House after work.  It was a great time to go because on Tuesdays and Thursdays the show house stays open later (until 8pm) and there are hardly any people! The three of us spent several hours soaking up the beautiful designs and chatting with the designers. It was great to hear from their perspective and listen to their opinions of this year’s spaces. The Show House is actually comprised of two luxury apartments on the Upper West Side in The Aldyn high-rise building. I think the asking price for one of the apartments is $16.9 million! Several designers said that visitors have complained about the location and the fact that the Show House is not in a Townhouse this year. In contrary, the designers have enjoyed the beautiful light that the location provids and understand that modern spaces also need to be considered.  They do however, present different kinds of design challenges. I agree and believe that all designers rose to the occasion, creating marvelous rooms.

The first space we visited was definitely a favorite – the Scalamandré Zebra entry designed by Bryant Keller Interiors was to die for and made me even more excited about the plans for my entry. Other favorites were the Thom Filicia room, the Albert Hadley Tribute room, the David Scott Interiors room, the Jamie Drake room and the Mark Hampton room. One trend that I did take note of, were that designers went very bold with colors and the dark rooms were typically very high gloss or lacquered. Lots and lots of lacquer! I was able to snap a few photos of my favorite spaces.

Please take the time to head over to the Show House, its truly inspirational. Additionally, if you’re coming from the east side they have a shuttle that picks up & drops off from the Park Avenue Armory.
