Apartment Updates: My Foyer

This weekend I took a break from wedding planning and gave a little attention to my apartment. I’ve been planning to work on my entryway for months now and I decided it was now or never to start. Although, I have to wait until the wallpaper can be hung by a professional, I painted the remaining walls. I’m especially excited about the golden door (Bryant Gold by Benjamin Moore) that is a strong contrast to the black walls (Black Jack by Benjamin Moore) and the pop of green from the entry cabinet (Arsenic Green by Farrow & Ball).

If you follow me on Instagram you’d probably already know that I both, purchased the Sputnik light fixture that I’ve been coveting for almost as long as I’ve waited to hang the paper. I finally took the jump and purchased one from eBay and I am so happy I did. Stayed tuned for more progress in the coming weeks!

Homemade Silhouettes: How To

This weekend I spent a little time on my apartment working on a few projects that had built up on the “To-Do” list.  A few weeks ago I purchased two frames from the Housing Works in Park Slope. They were small and inexpensive ($10 each) and slightly odd, but I could see that they could be put to good use.

Having two of these frames and two “children” I thought it would be fun to create silhouettes of my dogs, Rita & Max. It only took minutes to whip up their outlines from a profile picture in Illustrator and to print them out on an off-white paper. It’s such an easy way to have personalized art for your home.

Update: Entryway Additions

Entryway

Last weekend I made a lengthy list of things to do.  I also committed to finishing at least three things on that list during the weekend. Although very they may have been minimal tasks we did manage to check off three things: hang entryway mirror, refinish new chandelier, add basket to my bike. We also started a few other projects on the list, but have yet to finish them.

The first task we completed on the list was to hang the entryway mirror. I recently decided I wanted a much larger mirror in my entry than the current convex one. Luckily, my mother had one that she was willing to give up. I also purchased a chevron rug from Ballard Designs that I love – it was a great price at $35.00. I’m really excited about hanging the wallpaper (it has arrived!) and adding a Sputnik Chandelier, which I think will really pull the whole space together.

Entryway Lighting

Everyone loves a good light in the entry. Something with impact, drama and energy that says, “Welcome!” Recently, I’ve been on the lookout for a great light because the one we originally purchased for our foyer, although beautiful wasn’t the right fit for the space. The pendant was actually an “of-the-moment” purchase that in turn caused several months of reconsideration. For a while I didn’t want to admit to myself that I had made a bad purchase but I finally had to realize that it wasn’t bad, just not right.  I have also learned that there’s nothing wrong with that, I still think it’s a great light – not for my apartment.
I’ve decided that I want to go more in the modern direction with a mid-century vibe. So I’ve settled on two specific lights.  My favorite, the Sputnik chandelier is so fun and dynamic. But the Meurice chandelier by Jonathan Adler is a close second, it’s bamboo-esq rods pull in a tiny bit of the Chinioserie feel that I am quite fond of.  I particularly am drawn to the satin brass finish because I think it will coordinate perfectly with the Scalamandre Zebra wallpaper that I’m planning to install.  The hard part, is coming up with the cash! Luckily, there are a few reproductions and eBay finds out there that I may be able to hunt down.
